How to Write a Great College Admission Essay

Part of application process for most colleges is writing a short essay. This can play a huge role in your acceptance; therefore they deserve a lot of time, effort and attention.

  1. Step 1

    Most applications will give you a specific essay topic. Generally, the bottom line in these types essay questions is what sets you apart from the other applicants and why do you deserve to attended the college.

  2. Step 2

    Browse the college website and look for mission statements or news articles about the university. The point of this is to get a good understanding of what the university is about including goals and purposes and try to parallel this to your own goals in your essay. For example, my undergrad University was very involved in building up the underprivileged communities in the city. Therefore, I made sure to highlight so of the volunteer work I performed in my community and how it helped me to appreciate a quality education.

  3. Step 3

    After you've read the essay question over a few times over, begin to jot down ideas and different ways to approach the question.

  4. Step 4

    It is always nice to begin your essay with a quote from someone famous in your desired field of study. This will show that you have a true knowledge and interest in your desired major. It also gives you a good direction for your paper and will demonstrate your ability to connect ideas of others to your own which something you will be doing a lot of in your college courses!

  5. Step 5

    Outline your essay. Even if its one page, always outline the essay to make sure you are able to include everything without going over the number of pages or words.

  6. Step 6

    Make it all about you, you, you! Don't be afraid to brag about yourself. After all this essay is to show what makes you special and how much potential you have in the future. Make sure you are showing yourself off.
