Many children are interested in dressing up as animals for Halloween, such as zebras, unicorns and lions. You can save money by creating a zebra costume using items you may already have around your home, to combat the rising costs of professionally made costumes.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • White hooded sweatshirt and pants
  • Black craft paint
  • Paintbrush
  • Black yarn and white yarn, 1 skein each
  • Needle and thread
  • Measuring tape
  • 2 pairs of black socks
  • Black shoes
  1. Step 1

Measure your child from the seat of her pants to the knee. Cut eight pieces of black yarn and eight pieces of white yarn to this measurement, as this serves as a tail.

  2. Step 2

Measure 20 pieces of black and 20 of white yarn about 6 inches each and cut. They will become the mane.

  3. Step 3

Lay the shirt face down and draw stripes on the back with a pencil. Alternate sizes of the stripes to look more realistic, and then flip the shirt over and repeat the drawing of the stripes. Don't forget to stripe the hood as well as the sleeves. Then move on to the pants and complete the same task.

  4. Step 4

Use the black craft paint to fill in all the zebra stripes on the entire suit. Allow at least a half hour to dry between finishing one side and flipping over to paint the other side.

  5. Step 5

Tie a knot in the tail yarn, and then sew the knot into place on the pants. Take the mane pieces and sew alternating colors onto the top of the sweatshirt hood. Continue this straight down the seam of the hood until all the pieces are used.

  6. Step 6

Place one pair of black socks on your child's hands and the other on his feet. Place the black shoes on his feet for hooves.
