This article will explain some of the steps of changing gears while mountain biking and some tips on how to make it up some aggressive hills.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Mountain Bike
  • Bike Gloves
  • Helmet
  • Bike Shoes
  • Water
  1. Step 1

Get on your bike with all your gear and water and find a nice and tough mountain biking trail.

  2. Step 2

Start biking up the trail and once you see a hill that is steep, shift your gears to the lowest they go BEFORE you reach the hill. Bikes can not change gears when you have a lot of pressure on the pedals. It is very important you shift gears before the big hill arrives.

  3. Step 3

If your front wheel feels like it's coming off the ground a few inches, than that is a sign you need to lean forward on your handlebars more.

  4. Step 4

When pedaling, try to keep your feet parallel with the ground. This will give you more force on the pedals.

  5. Step 5

If you have clip-in bike pedals, make sure that you have lots of speed going up big hills. If you feel like you are going to fall over, stand up and pedal as hard as you can to regain speed. Before you go out and bike, practice clipping out of your bike about 10 times to really get the feel for it.

Tips & Warnings
  • Drink water to stay hydrated.
  • Always wear a helmet, even if you are just biking down the street.
  • Always bike with a buddy.
