A condensate pump is used in heating and air conditioning systems (HVAC) to pump or re-circulate the condensate from an air conditioning or heating unit. They are so reliable they often go unnoticed, but they do need some occasional maintenance. Cleaning the condensate pump is an important part of maintaining it.

    • Screwdriver
    • Household bleach

        Open the case or outer housing of the pump by removing the screws that hold it in place. Pick up the tank and pump, and then dump out all the water in both of them. Clean the entire unit, including the float with warm water, dish soap and a clean rag.

        Make a solution of 1/4 cup bleach to 1 gallon of warm water. Pour the solution into the pump and continue until you have run the whole gallon through the pump and the lines.

        Use clean water only this time and repeat the process to rinse the system clean. Reassemble the cover to the pump.
