Some computer games are specialized to play only on game consoles, some on computers, and some are available on both. Games such as EA's "The Sims 3 Collector's Edition," sometimes referred to as keyboard games because you use your computer's keyboard and mouse, are available only on Windows and Mac computers. If you are used to playing console games, you can start to learn to play keyboard games with a few basic keyboard and mouse commands.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Learn movement keys. Keyboard games commonly use one of two sets of keys for moving through a game. Press "W" or the up arrow key to move forward, "A" or the left-arrow key to move to the left, "S" or the down-arrow key to move backward and "D" or the right-arrow key to move to the right. Press the "Ctrl" key to crouch and the space bar to jump.

  2. Step 2

Learn firing keys. Not all keyboard games involve the use of weapons. For those that do, use the mouse. Point the mouse in the direction of the on-screen target at which you want to fire your weapon, left-click the mouse to fire the weapon and right-click the mouse to use a weapon's alternate firing mode.

  3. Step 3

Learn item keys. In some games, you collect weapons, maps and other items that you then use during the course of the game. Press the "Tab" key and a number from one to nine to select a particular item that you have acquired.

  4. Step 4

Learn game-specific keys. Keyboard games assign specific keys for uses that are unique to the game. Your keyboard game help file will list specialized game keys.

  5. Step 5

Print a list of both common and specialized keys. Keep it available where you can glance at it frequently until you have memorized the keys.

Tips & Warnings
  • These keyboard and mouse commands are common, but there is no universal standard for keyboard games. Check your game's help file to find variations in a particular game.
