You will learn how to make a piñata from paper maiche.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • balloon, glue, water, newspapers, tissue paper, piece of yarn, paint and other decorative items optional
  1. Step 1

Making a paper maiche piñata can be a fun, but messy activity to do with your child to prepare for a birthday party. You will need to set up an area where you can work without worrying about the mess. I usually put cardboard down on the kitchen table or the floor. Mix glue (regular white Elmer)with water to thin in a large bowl. Blow up a large balloon. Tear strips of newspaper.

  2. Step 2

Dip your strips of newspaper in the glue. I usually run the strips between two of my fingers so they will not be sopping wet. Wrap the strips around the balloon. Continue until the balloon is nearly covered with at least 3 layers. You want to leave one small area of the balloon exposed so you will be able to pop it later. If you want to make the pinata into an animal or anything other than a round piñata, you can now add these shapes. You can paper maiche toilet paper tubes for legs. You can paper maiche around a wadded piece of newspaper to make a head. This is a chance to be creative! Let this dry completely. It will take about 24 hours.

  3. Step 3

When your piñata is completely dry. Pop the balloon and pull it out of your hardened pinata shell. You can fill with candy in that opening. Use your newspaper and glue to paper maiche over the opening. It is also helpful to use a strip of newspaper and glue to paper maiche a long piece of yarn to use in hanging the piñata. Use several strips to make sure it is strong enough to hold. This could be done the previous day instead. Let dry. You can now use tissue paper, paint and other items to decorate your piñata.

Tips & Warnings
  • Water color paint and some kids' washable paint will not cover the newsprint. Tempra paint and acrylic paints will.
