Self Magazine covers a variety of topics from health and fitness to beauty and wellness. Many of the articles contained within the magazine are written by freelance writers. If you want to have an article published in Self, you need to know about the magazine, what topics they have covered and which ones they haven't. When writing an article for Self, you'll want to target it to the people who read the magazine.
Read the magazine. The best way to find out what the editors and readers are interested in is to read as many issues of the magazine as possible.
Craft an article that appeals to their readership. Self readers are different than the readers of other magazines. For example, the same article that would appeal to someone reading Money Magazine, may not appeal to a Self reader. When writing your article, make sure you know who you are writing for. You can find out the demographic and readership information for Self Magazine through their media kit (see Resources section).
Write a brief letter or email that outlines what your article is about and why Self readers would be interested in what you have to say. Try to be creative without straying off the main points: what you've written, why you are qualified to write it and why the readers would be interested.
Submit your query and article to the appropriate editor. You will find a list of editors and section editors in the masthead of the print magazine. The email format for Self Magazine is email@example.com. If you aren't sure who the editor is for the section your article is targeted at, send it to the editor-in-chief. You can also mail or fax your query and article to the address or fax number below:
Lucy Danziger, Editor-in-Chief
4 Times Square
New York, NY 10036
FAX: (212) 286-6174
Be patient. Magazines like Self receive hundreds of submissions and queries per week and it can take some time before they get to yours, often months. Wait six to eight weeks before following up with an email; most likely you won't hear back unless they decide to print your story.
