As the Internet continues to evolve, websites increasingly utilize large graphics and other files that take a long time to download. It has become necessary to obtain faster Internet connections in order to view most professional websites. A cable Internet service is among the fastest type of connection you can get in your home or office. There are a wide range of cable Internet providers to choose from and each has their own rates and features to consider.

From Quick Guide: Internet Provider Guide
Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Figure out your maximum monthly price range for your cable Internet service. Look for local cable Internet service providers in your area that are within that price range to begin your comparisons.

  2. Step 2

Decide what you will be using your cable Internet connection for and how much speed you actually require. Check to see if the Internet provider offers different tiers of speed at different prices.

  3. Step 3

Choose the lowest tier if you will primarily be surfing websites, sending emails and only occasionally downloading files. Choose a higher tier if you will frequently be uploading or downloading large files such as video clips.

  4. Step 4

Read through the terms and conditions of the cable Internet provider to find out if they require a contract. Consider a provider that does not require a contract if you have plans to move to a different area within the next year or two.

  5. Step 5

Find out if the cable Internet provider will give you a cable modem for free, rent you the modem for a monthly cost or include the cost in your first month of service. Check to see if the provider will let you use an existing cable modem that you already have at no extra cost.

  6. Step 6

Ask the cable provider if they have a bundled service package that includes television or phone service. Consider switching to the bundle package as it can save you money if you are currently paying for all three services separately.

  7. Step 7

Check to see if the cable Internet provider charges an installation fee when they send out a technician to turn on your service. Find a provider that offers the installation for free or at a low rate.

Tips & Warnings
  • Remember that you will need an Ethernet cable to take advantage of cable Internet service. Because the Internet connection runs from your existing cable line into your cable modem you will need to connect an Ethernet cable from the modem to your computer.
  • Don't forget to check the fine print of your cable Internet service agreement. Many cable providers only advertise their "introductory" rate, which may go up after a period of three months or even a year. Cable Internet connection speeds can vary based on usage. Generally the closer you are to the provider's servers and the fewer people who use the service, the faster your connection will be.
