Cognac, the most famous variety of brandy, derives its distinctive and sophisticated taste from the grapes Folle Blanche, Ugni Blanc or Colombard. French law requires that any liquor bearing the name "cognac" consists of at least 90 percent of one of these grapes, in keeping with the drink's 300-year-old production process. Like many other famous liquors, cognac hails from the French city of the same name.

1. Decide on the type of cognac you would like to purchase. If you are uncertain which cognac is for you, research the different grades of cognacs or the viticultural areas where the grapes used were grown, as both can effect the quality and taste of the liquor.

2. Call local stores that sell alcohol, including grocery stores and liquor stores, and ask if they carry the cognac you desire. Inquire about prices of the cognacs they have in stock.

3. Compare prices of the different cognacs available and decide on a retailer and brand of cognac.

4. Go to the store and purchase. Make sure you carry your identification card with you when you buy the cognac; you must be 21 or over to buy alcohol.
