In these hard times basic things such as housing can be difficult to afford. Luckily, there are low income housing units available in just about every major city. Citizens that earn below a certain income level are eligible for these units. Follow the steps below to get started in finding and applying for low income housing.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

To start you will need to gather everything required to apply for low income housing. This includes things such as proof of employment, housing records, etc. Contact your local housing authority to find out all of the required documents and income specifications in your area.

  2. Step 2

Contact the department of "Housing and Urban Development" (HUD). HUD is the Government's main housing office. Log on to HUD.gov to download and submit an application for low income housing. If an online application is not offered in your area, you may need to go in to your local HUD office to turn in the application .

  3. Step 3

Upon turning in the low income housing application, simply wait to hear back from HUD for a response. It may take up to a week to hear back from HUD. While you are waiting for a response be sure to look in to other sources of low income housing.

  4. Step 4

Another great way to find low income housing in your area is through websites such as Affordablehousingonline.com (see resources section below). Websites such as this one let you search your city and state for low income housing listings. There are different income requirements for each housing unit so be sure to read the terms and conditions for each apartment complex.

  5. Step 5

You can also find low income housing on websites that advertise privately and publicly listed apartments such as Craigslist.com. Many apartment managers work out deals with the housing authority that allow them to charge lower rent in exchange for tax breaks and other incentives.
