Trying to quickly stop a bloody nose should be done at the first site of blood. There are a number of different factors that can cause a nose bleed. Either way a nose bleed can be scary and you want to get it stopped as soon as possible. Below are some tips on how to get the nose bleed to stop and remember staying calm is very important

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Cold Compress or Ice Pack
  • Cleaning Supplies if blood on furniture
  • Cool Vaporizer (if you have one)
  • Petroleum Jelly (Vaseline)
  1. Step 1
    Slightly lean forward

    Slightly lean forward

Start by leaning forward and applying pressure to the nostrils by pinching them shut. Tilt your head forward slightly because swallowing blood can cause nausea, vomiting and diarrhea and don't lie down or lean too far forward, keeping your head above your heart will minimize the bleeding.(according to my doctor).

  2. Step 2
Pinch the soft part of your nose

Pinch the soft part of your nose

I recommend using following technique to stop the bleeding:
Pinch the soft part of your nose just below the bridge, the bony part. Use the thumb and index finger to squeeze it for at least 5 minutes. If your nose continues to bleed, squeeze again for at least 10 minutes. As you're doing this, breathe through your mouth. If pinching your nose the second time doesn't stop the bleeding, get emergency medical attention.

  3. Step 3
    Cold Compresses will reduce swelling

After, the bleeding has stopped or your on your way to the emergency room (depending on if you could get the bleeding to stop)apply a cold compress or ice pack on the bridge of your nose to prevent swelling.

  4. Step 4
    Cool Mist Vaporizer

    Cool Mist Vaporizer

After the bleeding has stopped do not clean out the inside of your nose right away this could cause your nose to start the bleeding again and you don' want that. Id use a cool vaporizer if you have one, this will moisten mucous membranes, which will help prevent the nosebleed from starting back up.

  5. Step 5
    Keep nostrils moist.

    Keep nostrils moist.

Apply petroleum jelly (Vaseline) to the inside of the lower nostril or Neosporin. Use a Q-Tip to apply one of the moisturizers inside your nostrils. This will help moisten your nostril which help it to stop bleeding.

Tips & Warnings
  • To prevent problems in the future, try using a humidifier in your home, we use one regularly and it helps. According to some sites most nosebleeds occur when nasal blood vessels become dry and cracked.
  • If you get a lot of nose bleeds, talk to your doctor. Occasionally, nose bleeds may be caused by more serious underlying diseases.

on 9/2/2009 I've always had nosebleeding problems and recently found a product that perfectly works for me. It's called NasalCEASE and I got it at CVS. It's a steril pack that I simply insert into my nostril. the nosebleed stops within a couple of minutes! Great product!
