This is so easy it shouldn't be an article, but here it is. Animals love to get in your garden or flower beds and rip them to shreds! Other animals like mice and rabbits do too. Young dogs like to get in gardens and eat your vegetables.. don't laugh, my dogs love to eat and chew on cucumbers! Our garden has a chain link fence around it, but when you have 5 rambunctious dogs outside, they'll do anything to get in trouble.. and in your garden.

Find the common spot that the little rascals have been coming in, either digging under a fence or just a trail they leave behind. You'll have to watch everyday, because the animals will go to different spots around the garden, if you have it behind a fence, and you'll have holes all around the fence. If you have a rabbit problem, you'll probably see them early in the mornings from afar, and you'll know where they're getting in. They usually use the same trail because they trust it. They go by their own scent.

Take a bottle of crushed, red pepper and leave around the spot they've been digging or the trail they have been using. You can also leave a thin line around the entire bed or garden. This does not harm the animal, but they don't like the pepper. I've tried this and it really works. If your garden is growing very nicely, and you have vegetables planted that overhang the fence, you might want to take twist ties and tie them to the fence where your dogs can't get to them. You can also use stick or plastic garden poles. Good luck.

Tips & Warnings

  • Don't put the pepper down if it is about the rain, as you'll have to apply the pepper a few times before they learn not to go there.

  • If all else fails, and they are wreaking havoc on your garden vegetables, you may want to use a low voltage wire fence around the perimeter of the garden. Just be careful that you don't forget to turn it off when you are working around the garden... it doesn't "hurt", but it gets your attention.
