Braids are a fashionable type of hairstyle.

Braiding is the process of interlacing three or more sections of hair to create a woven hairstyle. Having your weave or hair extensions braided in a salon can be costly, but you can learn to create neat and professional looking braids at home for a fraction of the cost. It is possible to create cornrows in extensions and weaves using the same technique that is used to braid normal hair, however extra care must be taken not to pull and dislodge the extension bond. Instructions

  1. Braids

    • 1

Place your hand on the roots of your weave or extensions. Brush through the hair with a paddle brush to remove any tangles.

    • 2

Section off the area of hair you wish to braid. Split this section into three equal segments. Lift the strand on the left-hand side over the middle strand so it now lies in the middle position. Lift the strand on the right-hand side over the middle strand so it lies in the middle position. Lift and move each strand with the same amount of pressure, being careful not to dislodge the weave or extension from the hair. Repeat this braiding technique until the desired amount of hair has been braided.

    • 3

Secure the end of the braid with a hair elastic.

    Cornrows

    • 4

Place your hand on the root of you weave or extensions. Brush through the hair with the paddle brush to remove any tangles.

    • 5

Separate a strip of hair where you want the cornrow. Section off a small segment of hair at the top of the strip that is no bigger than an inch. Separate this segment into three equal sections of hair.

    • 6

Lift the strand on the left-hand side over the middle strand so it now lies in the middle position. Lift the strand on the right-hand side over the middle strand, so it now lies in the middle position. Repeat once.

    • 7

Pick up a small section of hair from the strip underneath where the cornrow currently is facing. The section should be the same width as the braid and ideally the same size as one of the current strands of hair. Place the strand with the middle strand so it becomes one piece. Braid the left strand over the middle strand, the right strand over the middle strand and then pick up another section of hair.

    • 8

Repeat this braiding technique until you have braided the desired length of cornrow. Secure the end of the cornrow with a small hair elastic, wax or a pony bead.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you are braiding a clip-in hair extension, it's easier to braid it prior to attaching it to the head.

  • You can further secure the braid with hairspray or a thin layer of hair wax.

  • Do not pull or tug on the weave or extension, as it could cause damage to the bonds and cause the bonds to come loose.
