Harassing phone calls may make you feel like a victim causing a frightening experience. You can take action if you are victim of a harassing phone caller. It is against the law in some states to make unwanted, obscene or threatening calls.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Decided how often you get the harassing calls. Sometimes, just one harassing call is offensive, but many local phone companies will not take action unless there are numerous calls being made. If it is a specifically threatening call, then action will likely be taken sooner by the phone company.

  2. Step 2

Know who to contact. Different phone companies require different protocol for harassing phone calls. Contact your local phone company to get the policy for your area.

  3. Step 3

Call the police for life threatening or property threatening phone calls. You will need to file a report to get the calls on record. Be detailed in the report, even the smallest detail can be vital in how the harassing phone call is handled.

  4. Step 4

Know what your phone company can do for you. Can they trap your line to be able to tell where harassing calls originate from? Does your phone company offer call trace service? You can look in the phone book to get more details on call trace techniques.

  5. Step 5

Change your phone number if need be. Not all harassing phone callers can be caught. If they are calling from a pay phone the mystery just got more difficult for the law officers.

  6. Step 6

Take action on your own if you do not want others involved. Hang up on the caller. Do not have a conversation with the caller. This may only entice them to aggravate you more or simply give them their kicks.

  7. Step 7

Use the answering machine to screen callers.

  8. Step 8

Take precautions to prevent the harassing callers. Do not discuss personal information about you or your family members. Do not tell them what number that have called. If they called you, they should know the number. Do not tell them your name or anything else that they could use to gain access to your personal life.

  9. Step 9

Keep your children informed to not give out personal information over the phone as well.
