How to color your hair at home an easier way.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Hair color (the new 10 minute ones work well)
  • Lotion
  • GLAD Press'n Seal wrap
  • Shower cap - or clips for holding hair in place
  • Timer
  • Comb
  • Scissors
  • Paper towel
  • Baby wipes
  • Old t-shirt
  1. Step 1

First thing, your hair should NOT be freshly shampooed. This will make your dye job last longer if it is placed on dirty hair. If you have just freshly washed your hair, wait a day or two before coloring. Put on the old t-shirt. That way you can throw it away (or wash it) when you're done coloring your hair.

  2. Step 2

Take a comb and part your hair down the middle. That way the dye will reach your roots better. Make sure you remove all loose hairs after combing it thoroughly.

  3. Step 3

Next take your hair and temporarily clip it back away from you face. Then take the lotion, and put it around your face. First put it near your forehead, then near your ears, then near your neck, even on the back of your neck. Try to reach all the places that the hair coloring might hit on your skin if it drips.

  4. Step 4

Like I said the new 10 minute hair colors work great, plus they save you on time. Take out your timer, and set it to the suggested time. It is best to use the suggested time, unless you do not want a total coloring in your hair. If you lessen the time, then it could change the true color you're suppose to be getting from the box.

  5. Step 5

The next step is to take your Glad Press'n Seal, cut it into a size that would just fit over your ears. Take each piece, and wrap it over your ears. This will prevent the dye from getting on your ears, especially the top of your ears.

  6. Step 6

Once you take all those steps you should be ready to start coloring your hair. Make sure to place a piece of paper towel (or an old towel) under your hair dye. Also keep your baby wipes handing for wiping mistakes off your skin. REMEMBER to get the baby wipes wet with water, ring them out really well so that they're not dripping.

  7. Step 7

Start your coloring in a spot that you feel needs it the most, perhaps your roots, or the sides where gray hairs might be showing more. That will allow for the coloring to stay on those areas longer. Always start in the front, then work your way to the back of your neck line.

  8. Step 8

When you're doing the back of your neck line, dip your head down, that way the color will not drip onto the floor. After you have gotten the back of your hair done then lean to one side or the other.

  9. Step 9

By leaning to one side or the other, this will allow you draw your hair into a ponytail. If your hair is short you will not have to take this step. Gather your hair together and add your dye, try to reach to the ends of your hair. That should be the LAST thing you do. The ends of your hair are the most delicate, so you don't want to leave hair color on those for very long.

  10. Step 10

Next make sure that you've removed all extra dye that may have gotten onto your skin while coloring it. Use your baby wipes for this. Gently wipe it off your skin, by putting the lotion on there to start, that should make it wipe off easily.

  11. Step 11

Remove the gloves that they provided for you, and throw them away. Just put them back into the box the hair coloring came in, along with the bottles you used. Make SURE you empty the rest of the remaining dye into the toilet, and flush it several times to get the water clean (free of color).

  12. Step 12

Then remove the plastic wrap from your ears. Throw that in the same box. Then put that box of used color and items into another plastic bag, and throw it away.

  13. Step 13

Start your timer. Make sure that you look at the clock also to see what time it is, so that if your timer stops working for some reason you know how long you've had the hair color on for.

  14. Step 14

After the timer goes off, you're ready to rinse out the color. Again follow the instructions on the box. Some may tell you to only use the conditioner that they provided for you, others will allow you to shampoo. If they do allow you to shampoo, it is best to use L'oreal EverPure, it is sulfate free, and will make your color last longer. Their conditioner is great also. Always rinse really well if you do decide to shampoo after coloring.

  15. Step 15

Ring out the water from your hair, even use a wash cloth to get the most water out of it as your can. Then add your conditioner. Use what they've provided for you. That works best after coloring your hair. Try to leave it on for as long as you can. You can even put a shower cap on and leave it on for at least 20/25 minutes or more. Rinse that out really well.

  16. Step 16

After you have conditioned your hair, comb it out, do NOT use a brush, this will cause breakage. Then leave it, do NOT dry it or style it for at least an hour or more. If you are a person who always uses a hair dryer, try not to do that after just coloring your hair. This will lessen the damage to your hair. Allow your hair to AIR DRY. You will have a FABULOUS hair color if you take these steps to coloring your hair at home.
