How to Choose a Writing Niche

A niche is what a writer is known for, her specialty topic. When a writer has one, he is likely to gain loyal readers who are also interested in that particular topic. Choosing a writing niche may take some time, but it is important in every writer's career.

Instructions

    • 1

Figure out what you're good at. Personal interests are topics that you enjoy reading, writing, talking and learning more about.

    • 2

Consider topics in which you're already active. For example, are you a member of a technology forum? Could you see yourself writing about technological things on a regular basis? If so, write that down as a possible niche.

    • 3

Make a list of all of the topics you could see yourself writing about on a daily basis. From that list, create a list of subtopics. You should have at least 10 subtopics to work with.

    • 4

Choose one subtopic that you believe is the best fit. Try to create at least 20 possible article titles for that subtopic. If you cannot create 20 or more or if you feel stumped after the first five, do not choose that as your niche. Your niche should provide you with the opportunity to write forever on that topic.

    • 5

Find out what's popular. Conduct a poll on the top five niches you want to choose among. Use a search trend tool like Google Trends (see Resources) to see which topic is most popular on the Internet. Look up popular keywords in the SEO Book (see Resources). Select the topic that you're most passionate about, that is most popular and that has potential as your writing niche.

Tips & Warnings

  • Do not choose a niche that you are not passionate about. When you're passionate about something, you can create more content and enjoy the work while you're doing it. If you find yourself getting bored with your niche, chances are you'll feel less focused and less inclined to do the work.
