Braided bracelets are often called friendship bracelets. Braiding symbolizes love because the braided strands are intertwined in the same way that lives of good friends are. Making and exchanging friendship bracelets is a great way to show your love and affection to special friends. These colorful, symbolic gifts are easy to make and enjoyable to give.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Choose three colors of embroidery floss. Measure and cut two 24-inch strands of each color for a total of six strands of floss.

  2. Step 2

Tie the strands of embroidery floss together at one end in a simple overhand knot. Tape this knot to a work surface using a piece of masking tape.

  3. Step 3

Separate into three strands according to color, and braid them in the same fashion as hair is braided. Braid the strands this way for approximately 2 inches.

  4. Step 4

Tie the strands together after two inches of braiding with an overhand knot.

  5. Step 5

Separate the strands underneath the knot tied in step 4 in a different color combination. Instead of separating by color this time, combine the colors. For example, if you are using pink, purple, and yellow embroidery floss, place one pink and one purple strand together, one yellow and one pink strand together, and one yellow and one purple strand together. Braid the newly combined strands for approximately 2 more inches, and tie them together with an overhand knot.

  6. Step 6

Combine the strands in a different way under the knot and braid again. Continue until the bracelet is as long as desired.

  7. Step 7

Tie another overhand knot in the embroidery floss strands when the bracelet is the desired length. Be sure to make the bracelet large enough for the ends to be tied together around a wrist. Do not tie the bracelet together yet. Remove the masking tape, and trim any excess embroidery floss.

  8. Step 8

Give the bracelet to a friend or loved one, knotting the ends together in a double knot for fit around her wrist.

Tips & Warnings
  • Make sure you pull the embroidery floss tightly as you braid to create a tight bracelet.
