Bomb-sniffing dogs are crucial to law enforcement. They are the first method of detection for potentially harmful materials. These dogs aren't born with the ability to detect bombs; they need to be taught by professional dog trainers. Becoming a professional police/military dog trainer requires a lot of classes and hands-on training.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Look for dog trainer programs in your local area. There are many private bomb dog training schools that also offer online classes. Most will send information at your request.

  2. Step 2

Register for and attend the classes.

  3. Step 3

    Graduate from the program.

  4. Step 4

Open your own bomb dog training business or apply to be a trainer at an established training business.

  5. Step 5

Take advanced courses. Dog training is a continuous process and you should take classes every year to update your skills.

Tips & Warnings
  • Make sure the program you choose will result in a license to train dogs. Shop around; prices for dog trainer schools can range anywhere from a few hundred to thousands of dollars.
  • Ensure that the program you enroll in has a focus on bomb sniffing dogs and not just general obedience.
