How to Learn Latin Fast

Latin is essentially the building block language for all Western countries (from German to Spanish and English). Most modern languages have some sort of Latin background. This will be helpful when trying to learn Latin. Latin is not a widely spoken language any more, however it is still possible to learn, and for those willing to put forth the effort, it is possible to catch onto the Latin language quickly.

Find a program that combines both visual and audio learning material. This can be either an audio CD that has an accompanying book, or a computer program with both images and dialogue. Having both is important because the pronunciation of some Latin lettering is different from English, which will mean you will be teaching yourself the incorrect pronunciation. Also, sometimes seeing the word itself will help you catch on to what is being said. With audio alone, it can be difficult to understand exactly what is said, and simply seeing the text can correct misunderstandings. One such program that excels in this kind of learning technique is Rosetta Stone.

    • 2

Practice every day. The more you practice, the quicker you will pick up and learn the material. However, don't advance to the next section until you have mastered the current lesson. Doing so will only confuse you. Taking extra time on a specific section is alright. The goal is to learn the language, not finish the program.

    • 3

Watch and listen to Latin television and movies outside of the programming and software you are currently using. This will bring a fresh spin on your lessons. It will also increase your exposure to the language. The more exposure you have, the quicker you will learn. Renting a Latin movie or tuning into a Latin music station on satellite radio are both great options. Make sure the Latin movies have subtitles and are not dubbed over with English. Eventually you will recognize certain words and then after some time be able to piece together sentences and phrases said in the movies and music.

    • 4

Converse with another Latin speaker (if at all possible). This may be the most beneficial tool in learning Latin fast. Only do so after you have learned enough to carry on a slight conversation (such as asking the person's name, how they are doing or where they are going). The individual will most likely be more than happy to help you out with your learning and can correct and slight misconception you have about the language or teach you proper pronunciation.
