Remove a Window Screen

The best way to remove a window screen without damaging the frame or screen depends on how it was installed. There are two basic ways that a screen is held in place in the frame, by a spline or by moulding. In either case, removing a window screen is possible in just a matter of minutes.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Things You'll Need:

  • Standard/Flat-tip screwdriver

    Spline Removal

  1. Step 1

Remove aluminum and vinyl window screens by removing the spline, which looks like a rubber rope or cord.

  2. Step 2

Lay the window frame screen side down on a flat surface. Take a flat-tip screwdriver and insert it into the outer side of the spline. Sometimes a micro flat-tip screwdriver is needed if the spline is tight and thick. Always work on the outer side of the cord or you could damage the screen. Start the cord by prying up on it to get a small area loose.

  3. Step 3

Use your hand to pull the rest of the spline out. It should pull out easily all the way around the screen.

  4. Moulding Removal

  5. Step 1

Remove the moulding covering the edge of the screen. Use a flat-tip screwdriver to gently pry the moulding loose. Pry the moulding up by raising one side, then the middle, and finally the other end. Repeat until it is completely removed.

  6. Step 2

Remove all of the staples that were used to tack the screen in place by inserting the tip of the screwdriver under the staple and prying it away from the frame.

  7. Step 3

Remove the screen by grabbing one corner and slowly pulling outward. You are now ready to install your new screen onto the frame.
