Step 1
Listen to your child when he /she speaks to you. Give them your full attention and let them know that you really care about what they say. This will give them confidence in themselves because someone really wants to listen to their comments and opinions. It is also great to build up their verbal skills. Not listening to your child can have the opposite affect as they will lose self confidence and not feel like they are important enough to listen to.
-
Step 2
When your child does a good job at something let them know it. Tell them what a great job they did and tell them how proud you are of them. This will put a big smile on your kids face.
-
Step 3
When your child does not do so good at something never put them down. Tell them what a good job they did but also let them know how practice makes perfect. It's important to sink into your child's brain how important practicing at something makes them better and better. If another kid is better than your kid at something tell your child that if they practice enough they can be just as good or even better. This will also help build a good work ethic for your child to achieve his / her goals.
-
Step 4
Reward your child sometimes with a prize for their accomplishments. If your child brings home a good grade, take them out to eat their favorite food. If they did a good deed to help a fellow child, take them out to have some ice-cream, you get the idea. Of course, don't do this every time they do something great but sometimes it will show your child that you appreciate their good deeds.
-
Step 5
Ask questions when talking to your child. Answering questions will really give them confidence that you know that they are smart. Studies have shown that when people are answering questions they feel very special about themselves.
-
Step 6
Compliment your child through out the day. Tell them how kind it was when they help another child up who has fallen. Anytime they do a good thing let them know it. Far to many kids only hear about the bad things that they do and never hear about the good things they do.
-
Step 7
Don't only praise them when they do something really great, praise them sometimes for just being themselves. Think about the confidence they will have in themselves knowing that just being themselves is a good thing.
-
Step 8
Make your child earn little things in life. For instance, if your kid wants a new video game, tell them that they have to do some work around the house to earn it. Of course, the amount of work would be suited toward the age of your child. This will help your kids learn patience and be goal orientated to earn something, two attributes that will help them along in life.
-
Step 9
Let your child follow their passion. If you have dreams of them playing baseball and they don't want to - don't make them. Instead, your child make want to play the piano. If so, support your child 100% with whatever it is that they have interest in despite your lack of interest in it.
-
Step 10
Failing is part of life and everyone has failed. Your child is no exception to this rule. Of course you want to protect your child and don't want them to feel bad when failing but you must let them fail. If you don't then they can really be hurt later in life when they fail but you made them think that they can never fail at anything. What you have to teach them is that failing is a part of life and teach them to deal with it. You must show them not to take it so hard and to not get to down about it.
