Before traveling, you should make sure your passport is good for at least 6 months from departure. There can be delays if it's not the case.

Pack as light as possible. Remember that europe has almost everything that you can get in North America, and then some. Try to pack only a few shirts and shorts, and re wear clothes as much as possible.

Get yourself a eurail pass for easy access to Europe's extensive train system. Flying is also an option because of the many budget airlines throughout the continent. Eurail passes allow you to see the countryside and go from say Germany to France in a few hours.

Research your destination before you go. Europe has many hostels and campsites, and there's no reason not to use the internet to help you.

Try couchsurfing for a free night's stay. Couchsurfing is a great community with hundreds of thousands of members all over the globe. People will host you and sometimes show you around the city for free.
