Finding the right sized bra may involve some experimentation.

A bra that fits well is comfortable, slimming, and protects breast tissue from unwanted movement. Yet, an often-cited statistic is that 80 percent of women are wearing a bra that's the wrong size. Measuring is the best way to get an idea of where to start looking for well-fitting bras. However, bra sizing is not uniform and different brands may have different bra sizing practices. Be prepared to experiment with styles and sizes until you find the bra that fits you perfectly. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

  1. Band Measurement

    • 1

Place a tape measure under your breasts and around your back and ribcage. The tape should lie flat against the skin and be firm enough not to sag, but not so tight that it digs into your skin.

    • 2

      Note the measurement.

    • 3

Add 4 inches if the number is even and add 5 inches if the number is odd. The final result is your band size.

    Cup Measurement

    • 4

Run the tape measure around the fullest part of your breasts. This may be easier if you're wearing an unpadded bra. The tape should be firm but not tight.

    • 5

Note the measurement and subtract your band size from that number.

    • 6

Estimate cup size from the difference. A difference of 1 inch is an A cup, a difference of 2 inches is a B cup, a difference of 3 inches is a C cup and so on.

Tips & Warnings

  • Stand straight and relaxed when you're measuring.

  • Learn to recognize the signs of a well-fitting bra. For example: the band should support the breasts and not the straps; the straps should not cut into the shoulders; breast tissue should not bulge over the top of the cups, and the band should be horizontal and not high in the back.

  • Consider a professional bra fitting at a lingerie store, particularly if you're nursing or if your breasts are large or asymmetrical.
