How to Stay Active During Unemployment
Being unemployed isn't just a time without work. For many people being unemployed may lead to depression. You can survive unemployment by staying active -- don't use that time to sit on the couch, watch T.V. and eat potato chips all day. Instead, use the time to discover new interests, meet new people and even find a new career you're truly passionate about.

1
Apply for any unemployment benefits as soon as possible. The benefits may not be much but they can help you through as you look for a new job.
-
2
Polish your resume and cover letter and be prepared to pass them out whenever necessary. Have someone read your resume and give you ideas as to what you can do to make it better. Update your friends and contacts on your status and let them know you're looking for a new opportunity.

-
3
Get involved in a professional networking group and meet other people in your field. These groups may have events and meetings in which you can talk to people about new jobs.
-
4
Volunteer for an organization or get involved in a community project. Helping people in need and getting excited about a project is uplifting and can make you feel vital at a time when you may feel otherwise. Volunteering is also a great way to meet new people -- someone else involved in the organization may be able to provide you with a job lead. Volunteering and community involvement may help you pick up new skills. You may also use this as a line on resume, showing potential employers that you stayed active during your time out of work.
-
5
Go to lectures or free seminars at local colleges and universities. This is a great way to learn something new and keep your mind sharp.
-
6
Learn new skills. Many local workforce development agencies and community colleges provide low-cost classes. Learn how to design a website or speak a foreign language. What you learn could look mighty impressive on a resume. Take the time to explore a passion or an interest -- something that could lead to a new job. Use your public library as a way to learn something new.
-
7
Take care of yourself. Being unemployed isn't just hard on your wallet, it can be hard on your body as well. People lose sleep at night from anxiety or don't get enough exercise. Get plenty of rest. Take a nap during the day if you didn't sleep well the night before. Take a walk or go for a run. Eat healthy; you can still eat well even if you're on a budget.

Stay active in your field through social media. Join groups of interest on Linkedin and respond to questions. Start a discussion on an issue. Social networking sites are another way to meet new people and get job leads. Start a blog on Facebook or your own website so you can comment on the big issues in your field. Offer advice and insight. Just make sure your writings are clear and error free. Use Twitter to follow others in your field and offer your quick wit and insights there.
