There are several study abroad programs to choose from when deciding to go overseas during your college/university career. How do you decide which one to travel with?

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

First you must think about where in the world you want to go? International Education is booming in today's economy and there are several locations to consider when going overseas.

  2. Step 2

Once you have a destination in mind, you have to decide how long you want to go overseas for. Certain majors in higher education warrant longer times abroad, for example language study.

  3. Step 3

Keeping in mind where and for how long you want to go overseas, visit your Study Abroad Office/Global Studies Office/Office of International Programs on your campus. Speak with an advisor who will help you narrow your selection down even more by pointing out the programs that school is aligned with.

  4. Step 4

If your school offers several programs to the same destination, it can be tricky narrowing it down. There are things you will want to keep in mind as you select or weed out options. First is course availability. Does the program offer courses that are going to keep you on track to graduation?

  5. Step 5

If the academics work out, look at the student support services the program offers. Will the program help with obtaining a student visa(if needed), airport arrival assistance, or help in finding lodging? Does the program offer additional travel opportunities?

  6. Step 6

Once you have your academic program chosen, and you notice they have several student support options in place, the last thing you will need to consider is price. Prices can include everything from travel, tuition, food, and lodging. Every reputable program can produce a cost list of estimated expenses for participants.

  7. Step 7

Lastly, you should also ask to speak with alumni from the program. Any decent program should jump at the chance to have you speak with past participants and if the program can't provide you with alumni, think twice about going with them overseas.
