In shaky economic times, picking the right finance stocks can be challenging. There is always an element of uncertainty, but that is magnified during the recession. Some people say to stay away from financial stock picks because of the loan industry but it can be a great time to purchase undervalued securities.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Pick which finance strategy you want from low risk low growth to high risk high growth. This depends on how long you want to keep the money invested.

  2. Step 2

Look for companies that have a strong financial base, and don't have too much money tied up in paying off debt. The maximum debt to earnings ratio should be 50%, preferably much lower.

  3. Step 3

Find a finance stock with 15% earnings per share growth over the past decade, if possible. This shows a good demand for the company's product.

  4. Step 4

Diversify your picks. I know this is obvious, but it is important to make sure your investment is as safe as possible. Pick a financial stock in one industry, and another in a completely different industry.

  5. Step 5

Don't listen to online message boards or other people who claim to have insider information on a certain pick because they are usually just trying to push their own picks.

Tips & Warnings
  • Invest at your own risk. You have to go in with the knowledge and readiness that you might not win.
