It's often hard to calm your kittie's fears of having their claws groomed and you may be worried to do it yourself. But I can assure you that there is a quick and easy way to do this and how not to cut them too short. There is no need for cat nail clippers!

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Kitties scratch by instinct ro sharpen their claws and you need to make sure to trim down the cat's nails about once every 2 weeks. Cats can claw people or other cats, causing injuries, and the long claws can get caught on things. First, have a pair of human toenail clippers handy. Get your cat and pet him quietly and speak in a soft voice. Gently turn your cat so that his back is against your belly and sit down in a chair, holding him like a baby.

  2. Step 2

Once the cat has calmed down and is still, start with the front paws. Gently squeeze his foot with your thumb and forefinger, allowing the claws to fully extend. Going one nail at a time, insert the claw into the toenail clippers. Do not squeeze down to cut it until you are sure you have it in the right position. A cat's nail hides inside a white piece of skin. Make sure the nail is completely out.

  3. Step 3

You will notice that a cat's nails are translucent. Look into the nail and notice a white part that extends about 1/4 of the way up the nail. This is the nerve. DO NOT cut that far down. Cut just about that white part. In one quick motion, gently clip the nail. Work around the foot, then work towards his other front paw, then move on towards the feet. Ofen times you will not need to trim the back claws, but if you do, just treat them the same.

  4. Step 4

When you are done, soak a cotton ball in olive oil and rub a small dab over all clipped nails to speed healing and sooth roughness.

Tips & Warnings
