How to Sprout Seeds In a Paper Towel

With paper towels and a zip top bag, you can easily sprout seeds in just a few days. Use this as a fun activity for kids or as a science lesson at school. After the seeds sprout, you can plant them in a pot or in your garden. Does this Spark an idea?

Things You'll Need

  • 1 paper plate
  • 2 paper towels
  • 1 large zip top bag
  • Seeds
  • Water

Instructions

      Wet the first paper towel and lightly wring it out. Open it up, and lay it flat on the plate.

      Sprinkle your seeds in a single layer onto the wet paper towel.

      Wet the second paper towel and lightly wring it out. Lay it flat on top of the first wet paper towel. The seeds should be in the middle of the two wet paper towels, resting on the plate.

      Slide the plate inside the bag, but don’t zip it closed.

      Place the bag and its contents in the light for two to three days. Don't mess with it or peek at it for at least two days. Once you see the sprouts, you can transplant them into pots or plant them in your garden.

Tips & Warnings

  • Make sure you check them after the second day, to make sure mold doesn't start to grow.
