Changing your Acoustic Guitar strings is quick and easy. You should change your Guitar String about every 6 months

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Acoustic Guitar
  • New Strings
  1. Step 1

Begin by taking off the E string which is the thickest and lowest note on the guitar. Be sure to keep plucking the string so that you hear the sound getting lower--that way you know you're loosening the string!

  2. Step 2

Once the tension has been released and the string is loose, pull out the bottom pin on the saddle that holds the string in place. If you can't pull the pin out by hand easily, use a needle-nose pliers to remove the pin. It should come out easily then. Once the pin is out, remove the old string and throw it away. The new string has a little metal circle on one end. Take that end and put it in the hole where the string came out of. Put the pin back, making sure that the pin's notch is facing the string. Push down on the string to make sure it is secure.

  3. Step 3

Thread the top of the string through the tuning peg. If you have extra string at the top, don't cut it--just wrap it around the tuning peg and the string itself. Let it wrap around several times and hold your fingers down on the looped string as you tighten the tuning peg for the first time. On a metal guitar, there is a slit in the tuning peg. Make sure your string slides into the notches at the top and bottom of the bridge and the saddle. The vibration and tone will get higher as you tighten it. Never over tighten a string or it will break! Repeat these steps with all 6 strings.

Tips & Warnings
  • Your strings need more adjusting during the first few days. So you will find yourself turning and retuning in order to get the notes in tune. Speaking of tuning the guitar, here are the names of the strings. Starting from the lowest and thickest string to the highest and thinnest string is E, A, D, G, B, E. • Be careful taking out the strings so that they don't accidentally hit you in the face.
