Run your first 5k and survive

Running is no simple task—and while a 5K is only a small portion of a marathon, it can still be quite a challenge. These steps will help you (prepare to run and) run your first 5K and survive.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

If you want to run your first 5K and survive you need to condition properly. Run a few miles several times a week, and gradually increase the distance and days you run. Set out a few weeks of time to get in shape to run your first 5K.

  2. Step 2

Make sure you bring lightweight clothing. Buy something breathable and that won’t cause you to sweat. Cotton works for some people, but a jersey fabric is usually a better choice.

  3. Step 3

Bring plenty of sunscreen to protect you from UV rays. Not only is the sun dangerous for your skin, but it will sap your energy. Before you run your first 5K make sure you are using your nice bottle of banana boat sunscreen.

  4. Step 4

Be sure to pace yourself when you run. If you want to run your first 5K without running short of breath a hundred meters in to the race, your breathing must be slow and consistent.

  5. Step 5

Find a pattern that works for you, try to exhale as your foot hits the ground, and complete a full inhale-exhale cycle every 3-4 seconds. Take long breaths as short breaths can disrupt your breathing patterns and give you a side ache.

  6. Step 6

Finally, don’t give up! If you have trained for a few weeks you’re ready for your first 5K. It will be hard (and you might just get very tired), but don’t give up. By the time you finish you will know how to run your first 5K and survive.
