See if you can maneuver your way into that popular university class.

So you know exactly what courses you want to take for the new semester and what professors you want to take them with. The only problem is that state budget cuts have reduced the number of course offerings, and one of the classes you desperately want is full. Don't give up hope. Be persistent as you lobby the professor for a fair hearing.

Instructions

    • 1

Add yourself to the wait list if there is one. Most professors maintain such lists because some people already enrolled in the class will inevitably drop it before the semester begins.

    • 2

Email the professor of the class. Often the professor has the authority to add you to the class even if it is full. Be sure to tell the professor why you are interested in the class. For example, you might tell her that the class is required for your major or minor and that it is the only such offering that fits with your busy schedule. You can also visit the professor during her office hours to show that you are genuinely interested in the class.

    • 3

Talk to your academic adviser. If the class is required and you're approaching graduation, your adviser may be able to find a way to get you into the class.

    • 4

Email the department of the class you are trying to enroll in. Give the department personnel the same explanation you gave the professor. If the department head sees that you really want to take the class, or that you need it for your major, he is more likely to let you in.

    • 5

Attend the first day of the class even if you have performed the previous steps to no avail. Sit through the class. If you see extra seats available, talk to the professor afterward, explaining that you really want to be in the class. If she thinks you are genuine, she will most likely add you.

Tips & Warnings

  • Don't harass the professor. If you are constantly asking him to add you to his class, he may become irritated and tell you to leave.
