Check out your state's energy assistance program (also called the "weatherization" program). This is applicable if you are unable to pay to heat or cool your home. If you currently receive Supplemental Security Income (SSI), you may automatically be eligible for this assistance. Low-income families with a disabled child and people over 60 usually qualify also.

Apply for food stamps. Food stamps are granted by the federal government, but they are administered through your state and local government. If you qualify to receive food stamps, the money you save on groceries can be a welcome relief.

Don't be the victim of a scam. Remember that sites ending in .gov are usually government sites that provide accurate information. Sites ending in .com sometimes promise much in an attempt to make money for themselves.
