Sprouts are living foods that are full of vitamins, minerals, enzymes and amino acids, and you can easily grow them in your own kitchen. You can grow nutritious sprouts from the seeds of alfalfa, red clover, radish, sunflower, and buckwheat. All you need to grow organic sprouts are seeds, water, glass mason jars, and a plastic mesh screen.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • organic seeds
  • quart size jar
  • water
  1. Step 1

Pour one cup of organic seeds into a quart size, wide-mouthed jar. Cover the seeds with water and screw on the plastic mesh screen. If you don’t have a sprouting screen, cover the opening with cheesecloth and secure it with a rubber band.

  2. Step 2

Place the jar of sprouts out of direct sunlight and let the seeds soak at room temperature for approximately 6 hours. Smaller seeds can be soaked for less time, and larger seeds should soak for longer.

  3. Step 3

Pour the water out through the screen, rinse the sprout seeds, and turn the jar upside-down, prop it up at an angle, and let the jar drain completely. The seeds should be kept moist, but not wet. Otherwise, the seeds may spoil.

  4. Step 4

Return the jar of seeds to a warm and dark location that provides adequate airflow.

  5. Step 5

Rinse and drain the sprouts 2 to 3 times each day. If you live in a drier climate you may need to rinse the seeds more frequently, so the seeds do not dry out. Return the sprouts to the warm and dark location after draining. After the seeds have begun to sprout you may leave them in direct sunlight for a few hours to promote growth.

  6. Step 6

After your seeds have sprouted, which takes 4 to 5 days, you should rinse the sprouts to remove the hulls. Enjoy our home-grown organic sprouts!
