This is super cheap and Simple. If you're saving money to buy an electric fence and don't want to bury dog doo-doo, then here are a couple of temporary ways to keep your dog from digging out of your privacy fence. This wasn't temporary for me. I used it as a permanent way to keep my dog in, and other dogs out. I had a lab and a great Pyrenees (150 lbs!).

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Tobasco Sauce
  • Cayenne Pepper (powder)
  1. Step 1

Sprinkle Tobasco Sauce on the ground at the bottom of your fence. This worked so well with my Lab ,and her puppies, that we never had to do anything else. This is a very quick fix until you find something more permanent if needed. Check after mowing or a good rain to see if you need to reapply.

  2. Step 2

Using Cayenne Pepper works the same way.

  3. Step 3

Sprinkle on the other side of the fence if you have a female on the inside. It keeps out unwanted "visitors."

Tips & Warnings
  • The dog's nose is very sensitive and he/she won't keep rubbing it's nose in it to get out.
  • I only applied every two weeks. My lab was 80 lbs and 5 years old, so it works well with adult dogs.
  • Keep your dog on a "runner rope". You can buy them at any pet store.
  • Try to train your dog to stay inside of the fence. This is quite a challenge if you have a female dog.
  • Buy grass killer and kill the grass along the fence line. It will keep you from having to reapply as often.
  • You may want to wear gloves.
  • On a hot day, avoid wiping sweat and getting the sauce/pepper in your eyes.
  • I never noticed any irritation, but keep an eye on your pet. This is an old trick that my grandfather used to use to keep all of his hunting dogs in the pen.
