If you're a small business owner or you need a simple word processor for writing letters and reports, you might want to think twice before you rush out and buy Microsoft Office or Apple iWork. A simple download will give you a totally free office suite software package that you can use for your everyday needs. Here's how:

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Mac or PC computer with broadband internet
  1. Step 1

Point your web browser to http://www.openoffice.org. OpenOffice.org is the most functional and widely used open source office software package that includes software for word processing, database creation, calculations using a spreadsheet, creation of business presentations, and more. The software is available in numerous languages and works on PC or Mac.

  2. Step 2

Click "I want to download OpenOffice.org." OpenOffice will recognize your operating system. Note that you can also download OpenOffice for other platforms (e.g., Linux) and other languages; or you can order a CD-ROM from a 3rd party (for a small fee).

  3. Step 3

Click Download now! to begin the downloading process. Once OpenOffice successfully downloads to your computer, follow the instructions to complete the installation process.

Tips & Warnings
  • OpenOffice is open source, and thus saves documents as .odt (open-document text). ODT documents are cross-platform, eliminating the need for conversion.
  • If you're a Macintosh user, you may prefer the sleek Aqua look of NeoOffice. Download NeoOffice @ http://www.neooffice.org
  • If you need a word processor for kids, point your web browser to http://www.pcdownloadworld.com/prgdb/wordfile4me.htm
  • OpenOffice is great for small businesses and people who need basic office software for simple calculations, presentations, and word processing. However if you plan on more complex tasks such as graphic design or book layout, you will need to switch to a more advanced software package such as Apple iWork, Microsoft Office, Adobe Creative Suite, or WordPerfect.

on 10/1/2009 You should also try SSuite Office for a free office suite. They have a whole range of office suites that are free for download.

Their software also don't need to run on Java or .NET, like so many open source office suites, so it makes their software very small and efficient.
