If you are feeding feral cats, it is your responsibility to spay and neuter these cats, as well, to avoid overpopulation. Cats reproduce extremely fast, but a feral colony can be controlled and enjoyed. All it takes is some time and a lot of patience!

Difficulty: Challenging
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • a trap, depending on the size of your cats, I prefer a raccoon sized trap
  • stinky cat food (Friskies is great)
  • Gloves
  • a place to take your cats for spay/neuter
  1. Step 1
    Feral cat in a trap.

Make arrangements with a vet or clinic so that you can take your feral cats into be altered right away, if possible. The cats will be ok to stay in the trap overnight if there is no other option. Your vet will need to understand that they need to be flexible, since trapping cats is not an exact science.

  2. Step 2
Another feral cat from the same colony.

You will need to gather your supplies. Trapping cats works best when they are hungry. Place the trap with the door set. Put some food inside the trap. DO NOT put food anywhere else other than in the trap for now.

  3. Step 3

Now you will need to get away from the trap and just wait. If you have a large colony, you will trap one or two right away. If your colony is smaller, it may take some time. These cats are very smart and they know how to survive, but they will eventually go in.

  4. Step 4

Once you trap a cat, take them immediately to the vet, if possible. If not, put them in a safe, temperature controlled place until the next day. Always wear gloves, as cats can reach through the cage and do some damage to your hands.

  5. Step 5

Take the cat to the vet, cage and all. Arrange a pick up time. Make sure that the vet puts the cat back into the trap for a safe release.

  6. Step 6
Kittens from a feral colony, hidden under a truck by their mother.

After you pick your cat up from the vet, take them back to the colony. Aim the trap away from you and open it. The cat will shoot out of it like he is coming out of a cannon.

Tips & Warnings
  • You need to keep trapping cats until they are all altered. It takes some time, but it can be done.
  • Local rescues can give you advise, snd sometimes they will even loan you a trap.
  • Do NOT pet the cat. That is a VERY bad idea.
  • If you find kittens, go ahead and take them immediately. If you handle them at a young age, they can be trained to not become feral.
