Once you return home with the sod before you begin spread out your top soil and make sure there is at least 1 inch of space from the top of the cut out area vertically.

Now open up your bag of seed and spread half of the bag across the soil. Next use a rake to mix in the seed really good. Don't wet the ground yet!

Now begin to lay your sod. To lay sod yourself isn't really a science just make sure all the edges come together. Use a snap knife to cut the sod to fit. Always cut the sod on the root side it's easier than trying to cut a line through the grassy side of the sod.

After you have completed this step and you have your sod laid yourself grab the other half of the bag of seed. Spread the majority of the bag across the newly sodded area and the rest lightly around the area that isn't sodded. This will help the sod to blend better with your old grass.

Finally water the heck out of the new sod area. Use the water hose by hand first to drench the area. Make sure that all the seed you just spread is no longer visible. This will stop the birds from eating it. Now grab your rope and 4 sticks and rope off the area and your all set.

Using this method will produce the thick and luscious grass you desire. Remember to water the grass in the new area everyday. I recommend watering twice a day for 7 minutes, once in the morning before the sun comes up and after the sun goes down. Your new sod should be fully rooted into the ground within 2 weeks, and then it will be ok to cut the area with the mower.
