An upholstered valance or cornice is a fabric covered box that is mounted above the window and covers the rods that hold curtains or drapes.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Measuring tape
  • saw
  • drill and bits
  • 3/4 inch plywood
  • wood glue
  • finish screws
  • polyester batting
  • white glue
  • T-pins
  • staple gun and staples
  • fabric
  • 1 inch angle irons
  1. Step 1

Measure the window to be covered and allow at least 2 inches on each side and at least 3 inches deeper than the draperies are when they are open. Cut two boards that will be the length of the window width plus two inches and wide enough to accommodate the draperies. Cut 2 end pieces that will be squares with the width dimension of the boards that you have already cut. Glue the top and sides together with wood glue and when it dries, use finish screws to reinforce it.

  2. Step 2

Cut your polyester batting to cover the box on all sides. Using white glue, spread a layer on the outside of the front. Work from the front to the top and then do the ends. Use T-pins to hold the batting in place and anchor it firmly with staples. Trim any excess that might cause lumping when you put on the fabric.

  3. Step 3

Measure the fabric so that it will be big enough to cover the box and add an extra 4 to 5 inches all around. Use your T-pins to hold the fabric in place and work from the center outward to avoid wrinkles. Pull the fabric tight and fasten the edges over the edges of the batting and secure with staples.

  4. Step 4

The two ends are done by folding the fabric like you were making an envelope and anchoring it inside the back of the valance box. To mount the Valance attach the 1 inch angle irons over the window. If possible make these about 2 to 3 feet apart for good support and balance. Set the valance on the supports and stand back to admire your new window dressing.
