How to: Buy What You Want without Feeling Guilty

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Our God is an abundant God. He does not want us live in poverty. In fact, His words assures that us as we seek His kingdom and His righteousness first, “he will give you everything you need” (Matthew 6:33, NLT).

There are two concepts that need to be understood here.

  2. Step 2

Firstly, everything you need is not the same as everything you want. You may think that 70inch television or that latest iPhone is a necessity, but is it really?

By the same token, however, it doesn’t mean that you are forever stuck with the cheapest version of everything that you desire. There is absolutely nothing wrong with wanting something nice, as long as you do not value that thing above God.

So what is the secret to buy what you want without feeling guilty? It is this; you can buy what you want, and what you want only.

  3. Step 3

What I mean is this, you can have whatever you desire, as long as you decide that it is truly something you want. Once you have this item, you will be satisfied and will not seek to upgrade for that category. If you can be honest with yourself and get what you want instead of a compromise, my experience is that it usually works out cheaper in the long run.

For example, when I was 16 I desired a Louis Vuitton handbag which at that time cost around $500. Now it was a lot of money to pay for a handbag, especially as other kids my age had no name handbags that cost $50 or under. I was not wealthy but I was very honest with myself that I wanted that bag and that bag only. So I worked for it and made sure that I was not tempted to spend my money on other bags, no matter how similar they may look, for a fraction of the price. Sure enough I got that bag and to this day I still use it from time to time and it still looks great, whereas my friends’ cheap handbags have all fallen apart and discarded.

So here lies the secret, be honest with what you truly want, do not compromise, do not feel guilty. Once you have it, know that you have the very best and be satisfied with it and stop looking for more.
