How to Install a No-Salt Water Softener
Traditional salt-based water softeners treat water by extracting minerals. However, the systems often remove beneficial minerals that your body needs. The result is water that feels slippery and tastes salty. You can install a no-salt water system easier than you can install a salt-based treatment system, because most no-salt water systems are housed in a single unit that fits inline with your main water system. Does this Spark an idea?

1
Locate the water main shut-off valve for your home, and turn it off. Run water through a faucet until the flow of water stops.
-
2
Place the softening unit inline with the copper pipe that extends from the water main shut-off valve, and mark each end of the unit onto the pipe. Cut the marked locations on the copper pipe with a copper pipe cutter, and discard the section of pipe beyond the marks.

-
3
Slide a compression nut onto each end of the copper pipe, and then slide a compression sleeve onto each end of the pipe.
-
4
Wrap plumber's tape around the threaded nipples on each end of the no-salt unit.
-
5
Thread the compression nut closest to the main water shut-off valve onto the water "inlet" nipple on the no-salt unit, and then thread the compression nut on the other copper pipe onto the "outlet" nipple. Tighten both compression nuts with a wrench.
-
6
Plug the no-salt unit into a standard 110-volt electrical outlet.
