How to Use Order of Operations

How to Use Order of Operations thumbnail
Order of operations creates a standard for solving math equations.

Operations are the method of solving mathematical equations. Mathematical operations include addition, multiplication, subtraction and division. The order of performing these operations is important because an incorrect order will give a wrong answer. Following the standards for the order of operations allows everyone throughout the world to perform mathematical equations in the same method and get the same answer without confusion.

Instructions

    • 1

Look for any parentheses and brackets in the equation. Calculate the operations within the parentheses first, and then calculate operations inside the larger brackets.

    • 2

Look for any exponents in the equation and then simplify those exponents by performing them.

    • 3

Perform multiplications and divisions in the order they appear in the equation, from left to right.

    • 4

Perform additions and subtractions in the order they appear in the equation, from left to right.

Tips & Warnings

  • Practice makes perfect! Work until you've got it down well (it may take a few weeks to fully stick). Like riding a bike, once you have it down, you'll never forget!

  • It may be easier for some people to think about "Please Excuse My Dear Aunt Sally" than just the word "PEMDAS", or maybe vice versa. It depends on the person; use whatever is best for you!

  • It may take you a few weeks to get the hang of it; don't get frustrated!
