Milk paint has been used for centuries, long before oil-based paints were possible and have endured because of the unique look and durability. In early America, milk paint was used to paint houses and household furniture. Because of this, the creamy look of milk paint is often associated with antiques. To get the same look on your craft projects, follow this recipe for powdered milk paint.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Powdered milk
  • Pigment powder
  1. Step 1

Mix one cup of water with one cup of powdered milk in a jar or container.

  2. Step 2

Add powdered pigment a little at a time until the color reaches the desired intensity. Be careful not to add to much pigment as this could affect the consistency of the paint.

  3. Step 3

If the paint is lumpy, line a strainer with cheesecloth and strain out the lumps.

  4. Step 4

Use milk paint on unfinished wood or other semi-porous objects. Metal, plastic and glossy finish will not hold milk paint without sanding or special primer.

Tips & Warnings
  • The finish will be somewhat glossy, but for a high-gloss spray with acrylic finish.
  • Milk paint is all-natural and is an easy way to make your craft projects green.
