Things You'll Need:
- wood glue
- sandpaper
- clamp
- washcloth
-
Step 1
If you are going to glue wood, make sure that the wood you are gluing has been properly prepared. For example, if it is a painted piece, make sure that you have stripped the paint off of the wood first.
-
Step 2
You'll also want to make sure that the wood has been sanded and is free of dirt and oils, which can cause the glue not to adhere well to the wood.
-
Step 3
When you apply the wood glue, make sure not to apply too much. You want to apply just enough so that when you squeeze the two pieces of wood together, perhaps a bead of glue comes out. You can wipe that off with a damp washcloth.
-
Step 4
Finally, you'll need to clamp the two wood pieces together after you glue them. You may want to use a washcloth or other soft cloth in this step if you are gluing a soft wood, because you don't want the clamp to make a dent in your wood. Clamp the wood pieces tightly together and allow to dry for 24 to 48 hours.

Step 5
If you are gluing wood to other substances, such as glass or plastic, be aware that there are glues that are made especially for gluing these materials together, such as polymer adhesives. Using the right glue for the job will make a huge difference in the life of the product you are creating.
