First, find a common denominator. The big word denominator means the number on the bottom of the fraction. If the numbers on the bottom of each fraction are not the same, you're going to have to do some math. The easiest thing to do is just multiply both numbers by themselves. Remember to multiply the top number of the fraction by the opposing fraction's bottom number.

The next step is to add or subtract the fractions. When you go to add or subtract, you only change the top number, the bottom number should now stay the same. Add them together, or subtract them. With more complicated subtraction you might need to pull over from the next column.

Finally, simplify the fraction. Reduce to the lowest common denominator. This is as simple as dividing the top and bottom numbers by 2, 3, 5, or whatever other number they are both divisible by. Check your work with a simple calculator.
