How to Knit a Summer Scarf in an Afternoon
Summer is a time of hot days and warm nights. It is also a time of backyard parties, concerts under the stars and patio dining -- events for which you can dress up. Summer clothing is light and comfortable, so a summer scarf should be too. If you knit, making a simple summer scarf is an enjoyable project for a lazy afternoon.
Things You'll Need
- 300 to 400 yards of a worsted-weight yarn
- Knitting needles, U.S. size 6

1
Choose a yarn that is light enough for summer. Cotton is a good summer fiber, but cotton yarn is heavy. A cotton blended with another fiber like silk is lighter. Also consider hemp, bamboo or linen, or yarn blends that include these fibers.
-
2
Cast on 20 stitches onto the smaller needle and knit two rows.
-
-
3
Change to the larger needle and knit one row. This is the wrong side of the scarf.
-
4
Change to the smaller needle and knit one row. This is the right side of the scarf.
-
5
Continue in this pattern, using the larger needle for the wrong-side rows and the smaller for the right side, until the scarf is as long as you want. End with a right-side row.
-
6
Knit one row with the smaller needle and bind off all stitches.

Tips & Warnings
Put a pin on the right side if you have trouble determining which side is which.
This scarf uses two sizes of needles to create a sheer, open fabric. If you choose a different weight of yarn, adjust the needle sizes accordingly.
