Things You'll Need:
- Writing materials of choice: pen/paper or computer
- enough time that you will not feel rushed
-
Step 1
Determine one or two characteristics or achievements that define you as an applicant; i.e., you enjoy volunteering in a Soup Kitchen, you started a local rock band, your favorite place to think is when you are outdoors.
-
Step 2
Think about a "story" that corresponds to this characteristic/achievement; i.e. being affected by seeing a mother and homeless children on a street corner while driving through an economically depressed neighborhood, describe the first time your local band performed in front of an audience, paint a "word picture" of your favorite spot to think.
-
Step 3
Realize that most application essay questions provide an opportunity to talk about your unique qualities. Answer the question, but make sure you incorporate something person in your answer.
-
Step 4
Pay special attention to the beginning and ending phrases in your essay. These first and last impressions are important. Work on creating a unique opening paragraph so the reader will look forward to reading the rest!
-
Step 5
Try to vary your word structure so that each sentence does not follow the same pattern; avoid the overuse of "I" and "me" (this can be challenging).

on 10/14/2009 Be original, show who you really are. Make the story you tell interesting. Be creative. If you’re a naturally humorous person, then let it show, but don’t try to force it. Write from the heart and let your personality show through.
