If you are thinking about upgrading to a better and more versatile camera, a DSLR (digital single lens reflex) camera is the best choice.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

The reason to select a DSLR (digital single lens reflex) camera is for its versatility, quality, and lens selection. A DSLR camera offers the option of adding lenses, usually of a longer focal length. Long focal length lenses allow the capture of larger images of the subject, usually sports and nature, for instance.

  2. Step 2

When selecting a DSLR camera, price is always a consideration. The average life of a 'starter' DSLR camera depends on usage, and care, but with light use, a low-end starter DSLR camera could last five or more years.
When selecting a camera, a good decision point might be to examine the variety of lenses offered, and if they are usable in other models in the same brand. When upgrading to the next model or a more expensive model of the same brand, it is nice to know you can use lenses previously purchased.

  3. Step 3

Visit vendors who sell the brands you are interested in purchasing. Hold the camera in your hands, determine if it feels comfortable. Can you hold it and use it with ease? Are the menus easy to decipher. Are the buttons and features easily accessible? Will you enjoy holding and operating this camera? Are you comfortable with the cost? And will other lenses work with this camera?

Tips & Warnings
  • It is wise to learn as much as you can about the camera you wish to purchase from sources other than the sales person.
  • Look at online sources (dpreview, and Steve's digicams) offer not only reviews of current products, but also commentary on features and ease of use.
  • Look at online vendors and compare prices so you know what the current market price is.
  • Unfortunately, buying online has some drawbacks. Little support from vendor is a big concern. There will be no teaching or support to speak of from online sales.
  • Some online vendors are notorious for what is called 'bait and switch' tactics. This is usually defined as advertising one item, and switching what they sell, or selling partial packages and not supplying all that is included in the box by manufacturer, then charging high prices for necessary items.
  • There are reliable honest vendors online. Ask around to find out who they are.
