How to Remove iCal Duplicates

How to Remove iCal Duplicates thumbnail
Fixing duplicates in iCal requires checking and removal.

ICal is the calendar program that comes preinstalled on all new Mac computers. The software not only allows you to view dates, but also create reminders of events (such as a birthday, appointment or due date for a bill). Using iCal, you can manage multiple calendars in one display and also synchronize your calendar to your iPhone or other device. Sometimes, though, the synchronization goes awry. In addition, upgrading your operating system may cause duplicates, which can be particularly annoying. Both issues can be fixed, however.

Instructions

  1. Delete Duplicate Events

    • 1

Open iCal and view your calendar in the format that's easiest for you to view the duplicates.

    • 2

Select the "Week" option if it's a repeating event that's duplicating. This view is often the most efficient when dealing with duplicates, as the month option provides only one line of text and the Day option shows just one day at a time.

    • 3

Highlight the event and press the "Delete" key or choose "Edit," then "Delete." If the event is one that repeats, iCal displays a message confirming the deletion. Select "Delete All Future Events" to remove duplicates for the event you've chosen.

    Deleting Duplicate Calendars

Use a backup to restore your calendar if you've synchronized your calendar with your iPhone , .Mac or other device and just upgraded to Mac OS X 10.5.2. This will remove all duplicates.

    • 5

If you don't have a backup, open Mail and take your accounts offline. Open iCal and delete the duplicate calendars by selecting them and pressing the "Delete" key or selecting "Edit," then "Delete."

    • 6

Return to Mail and delete the upcoming event notifications in the Outbox. Then bring your Mail accounts back online.

Tips & Warnings

  • There is no way to view the entries that the program states are duplicates, and there is no way to stop the removal once you select which calendar you want scanned for duplicates.
