1
Determine why you need the medicine ball: for speed training, for strength training or for endurance training. Generally, smaller medicine balls are used for speed training whereas larger, heavier medicine balls are used for strength and endurance training.

2
Determine what you will use the medicine ball for: throwing, catching or added resistance. In addition to choosing a medicine ball based on what type of training you need, you should think hard about what exercises you will use the medicine ball for. Medicine balls can be used for a variety of things. You can throw the ball to improve the strength in your arms. You can have the ball thrown to you and catch it to improve stabilizing muscles in the arms. You can lift the ball and twist side to side with the ball in hand to improve your leg muscles and back muscles. Determining which exercises you will use the ball for will help you make a decision as to the size and shape of it.

Choose a medicine ball that is heavy--- but not too heavy. This is a matter of personal preference and choice; there are no hard guidelines. But if you can barely lift or maneuver the ball you are thinking of purchasing or using, it is likely to be too heavy. Choose a ball that you will be comfortable throwing and catching but one that will force your muscles to work hard. Above all, be mindful not to choose a ball too heavy or too light, as injury could result from over-straining your muscles.
