  1. How to Do Retro Hairstyles

    • 1

Start with slightly dirty hair. Hair should be completely dry and free of any heavy product, as you'll be adding product to it and don't want to weigh it down.

    • 2

Roll your hair. Section off the crown. This portion of the hair will create the pomp at the top of the head that gives the hairstyle a retro look. Use the large rollers for this area. You probably will use three to four rollers. Use the fine-tooth comb, so the pieces of hair you roll are even. Spray the hair with hair spray and then roll from tip to root, securing with the roller pin or clip.

    • 3

Section remaining hair into three sections, one at each side of the head and the back. Use the smallest rollers for the sides and the medium ones for the back. Use the fine tooth comb to create pieces of hair for the rollers. Spray each section before rolling it. Roll hair from tip to root and secure.

    • 4

Allow hair to set for about half an hour or until rollers are completely cool. Mist with hairspray while rollers are still in place and shoot hair with a few cool blasts from your blow dryer. This will further "set" the curls.

    • 5

Remove rollers carefully as you don't want the hair to frizz. Mist with a shine spray, or put a few drops of shine serum on your hands and run through your hair to break up the curls.

    • 6

Create the pomp. Take the front section of hair and roll it facing outwards, allowing one hand to act as roller (wrap the hair around this hand). Secure the pomp at the base with a few bobby pins. Make the pomp as tall and exaggerated or as subtle as you'd like.

    • 7

Style the remaining hair. The pomp achieves the look of a retro hairstyle, so bring the remaining hair back into a ponytail or bun, or leave it loose. A ponytail or bun works well for every day, while full, loose curls look great for a special occasion.
